It Always Rains On Halloween.

It always rains on Halloween.
It turns the midget witches mean.
Hulk howls and drips an acid green,
and everyone gets wet between
plastic costume and plastic hat.
Princess hair goes limp and flat.
Water logs the vampire bat.
All stand and drip on front door mat.
***
Warm and dry inside the house,
lady says look, it’s Minnie Mouse!
Hold your sacks out for liquorish,
or a baggy full of nice gold fish.
Soggy socks are sopping wet,
and liquorish is all we get?
***
Dark out here, the puddles wait.
A deep one just inside the gate.
Bunny slipper dunks, and then its mate.
Take me home, like right now, straight!
***
But more doors on which to knock
hide candy-candy down the block.
Now! wails Mouse, kicking a rock.
A little longer says giant clock.
***
Bags get heavy, filled with loot.
Dinosaur trips on a root.
Bottom of a bag blows out.
Candy spills along the route.

It always rains on Halloween.
It turns the midget
witches mean.
Note: As a young kid door-knocking in Pearl River, New York, this is my memory. It always rained, and the bottom always fell out of the brown paper bag that held the loot.

Wonderful. You’ve got Halloween pegged.

At least the Halloween of yesteryear. In our neighborhood kids often come without costumes and hold open their back packs.

Here’s to a dry day and lots of sugary loot.

Dang it, Robyn, at our age they don’t let us eat sugary loot–nor do they encourage us to door-knock.
