Happy Halloween.

The Spare Pair of Feet
I keep them in the closet
my spare pare of feet
side by side among my shoes
together nice and neat.
***
If an accident should happen
if I should lose a toe
I have ten more to choose from
all waiting in a row.
***
And if I ever need an eye
an earlobe or a heart
a tonsil or an eyelash
or any other part—
I keep a good supply on hand
I keep them just in case.
There isn’t any part of me
that I cannot replace.
***
So if I’m ever swallowed whole
or buried in concrete
my friends can build a whole new me—
starting with my feet.

Thanks for the smile! And the more I think about your poem, the deeper it goes.

This poem comes from a collection I attempted–scary poems for kids. It lives in a drawer but comes out at Halloween, one poem at a time.

[…] Note: Halloween must bring out my inner poet. Here is last year’s Halloween poem. […]

This delightful poem makes me want to find some young children so that I can share it with them. You continue to amaze me with all of the arts you have your bony fingers in.

Thanks Sheila! Young children would be lucky to hang out with you no matter what you were up to.
